Remember how I mentioned early on that Shao Zi et al. are demons (妖 // yāo) that are more like spirits, not the demonic kind? Well, these folks, like the snake spirit, are actual demonic demons (惡魔 // è mó). The meanings behind yao and é mo tend to get lost in translation and simply become demons, which has become the conventional term for both in English. To avoid confusion, I’m translating é mo as devils.

Today, the scholar runs into the unlikely problem of saving his girl from being eaten.

Hi everyone, apologies for the unannounced break. I’ve had some personal things going on so translating has had to take a back seat. I didn’t have a chance to do a thorough edit but wanted to make sure to get this post out today, so please let me know if you spot any typos!

Happy June! Anyone else loving these longer days of sunshine as much as I am?

Today’s chapter is one of revelations.

Hi all. So instead of posting this chapter then take a break, I took a break then decided to post the chapter. Oops. The good news is, we’ll be back in business next week.

More on the little lotus lantern today. This is another short arc, so we’ll be wrapping things up soon.

It feels like I just had a hiatus, but after this arc ends in the next chapter, I’m going to take a one or two week break. I’ll usually translate in bursts and focus on either Memories or this story for an extended period of time, and recently Peony’s just been unlucky and has been getting the short end of the stick. Hopefully, this little break will give me some time to catch up on IRL things as well as edits and translations for upcoming Peony’s chapters.

Hi all, sorry for no Thursday update last week. I briefly mentioned why in the recent chapter update for Memories of a Graceful Reflection.

A brief note that the blue (青 // qing) color that often comes up is actually closer to a jade-like blueish-green, similar to a paler cyan, but it’s vague enough of a color that it often gets translated inconsistently in the Chinese-English speaking world. Sometimes it refers to a greener blue, sometimes a bluer blue. For instance, Qing Long is translated as Azure Dragon even though it uses the same qing character as the aforementioned.

When Shao Zi described the color of Gao Ren’s robes in 4.01, she actually said it was a bamboo-like qing, meaning, a greener blue. I won’t be going back and correcting all the instances of qing in past chapters from blue to cyan or greenish blue since it doesn’t affect the story, but just know that there is a theme going on in parts of this chapter 🙂

The scholar is such a simp when it comes to his favorite little peony. I love it. This is the make-up chapter for me not posting last Tuesday.

Sorry for the lack of a Tuesday update. I was really swamped, for one. And I also just…didn’t love this arc, which made editing it such slog. There’s a high chance that there might be typos still 🙁

I recommend listening to Mao Bu Yi’s Unsullied when reading this chapter to make it a vibe. There may also be an extra chapter this Sunday to make up for this week.
